I was invited to company headquarters for the first time. It was a big deal. I was excited. I got to meet the top executives and go to dinner with them. At the dinner, the owner told a rape joke. I was stunned and silent while every guy at the table laughed along with the boss. I wondered if he would have said such a thing if a woman had been at the table. I regret not saying anything.
At another after-work event a year later, I heard him ridiculing one of the company’s female VPs for being “fat and smelly.” I quit some time after that. Years later, I heard he hired a wife beater to run the company. Sexism and misogyny in business is alive and well.
